Lap swimming, copywriting and finding the perfect Kiehl’s lip balm

A month of new starts, fresh planners, and its fair share of resolutions, January is a bit of a strange month. But if you break it down, it’s really just like any other month, with up’s that go along with down’s, and good things that march along with hard ones. I’ve rounded up a few of my all-time January Faves, things I’m doing, feeling, or can’t get enough of right now.

Top 5 dance tracks to get you moving and happy no matter where you are

Have you tried any kitchen-dancing lately? I’d highly recommend it. Especially if you happen to be in a funk, like I am at the moment. It’s nothing terrible, this funk of mine, just a typical under-the-weatherness. You know the type, I’m sure. It’s subtle, invisible, almost imperceptible but annoying like anything. So, I did the only practical thing I could tonight: I turned on this exact playlist, raised the volume, put my phone to rest on the kitchen counter, and just, you know — danced.

How less clutter restored my sanity and paused my frantic life

An hour and a half on the freeway, and we were there. A small town with wide gravel roads, roundabouts instead of traffic lights and a city centre with a Myer that felt like it had been trapped in a time warp since 1995. It was quaint, it was quiet, with hidden laneways and old, stately buildings pushed up against clean, modern structures, all edges and glass. It was the chalk to Melbourne’s cheese. We could have been anywhere.

Chanukah: the festival of light and abundance

I’ve always liked the festival of Chanukah (Hanukkah). I mean, what’s not to like? It’s low key, it’s easy, there are no strict commandments to follow, it’s the lighthearted cousin to the rest of the Jewish festivals. Sure, there are traditions, but they mostly centre around eating oil-drenched foods. See — what’s not to like? And then there are the candles. What is it about candles, anyway? They are so mesmerising to watch, and so fulfilling to light. Something tugs at my heartstrings each time during the lighting ceremony, and I’m not altogether sure why.

Top 5 things I’m weirdly nostalgic about from the 90s

Life was simpler in the 90s. It was a slower time, and there was less of everything — less choice, less complications, less drama. But having less meant we actually had more, and there was something intrinsically satisfying about it all, especially looking back. In the prehistoric days before internet, we had to create our own fun — so we did.

Therapy Clothes? Get super warm and cozy in 3 seconds flat

It’s raining outside as I type this. It’s stay-at-home-and-get-mega-super-cozy, kind of weather. And so here I am, it’s Sunday night, and I’ve gone into rain-induced reflection mode. But that’s enough ramblings. A few months ago, I came across an article on Repeller, about “therapy clothes.” The author, Haley Nahman, describes therapy clothes as outfits that feel like physical and emotional hugs, and make you feel comfortable and at ease on both a physical and emotional level.

How I transformed my birthday blues with an unexpected trip this year

I generally hate birthdays. The attention, the fuss, the expectations, uggh. Something about turning a year older, and realising I’m not exactly where I want to be in life, is just plain depressing. So this year when my husband asked what I wanted for my birthday, I suggested we skip the traditional present ceremonies and just go away somewhere instead.

Awkward over money? How being open about money can lead to a life of abundance

It is one of the most basic and fundamental needs, and it impacts even the most mundane decisions. And yet, I cringe every time I have to say the word “money.” Money. It’s just a word, but it’s become like a dirty word for me. I still can’t bring myself to say it, especially out loud. Even in situations where it’s the most appropriate word to use, I’ll say “payment” or “bank transfer” instead. But I’m far from the only one. A quick google search brings up pages and pages of links to people who feel the same as I do about money — interesting.

Did you miss shopping during lockdown? I did, but not for the reasons you may suspect

Ok, I’m going to come right out and say this: I seriously missed shopping during our 3 month stretch of lockdown here in Melbourne. It may sound shallow, superficial or just plain desperate, and perhaps it’s all three, but I missed it more than I’d care to admit. And let’s just say, that’s A LOT. But it might not be exactly what you think. Let me explain. Shopping is recreation for me. It’s a hobby, a pastime, an activity. I generally enjoy shopping alone, because shopping is time out for me; it’s just plain relaxing. I like being surrounded by pretty things. It’s an inspiration to walk through a shop and see the new styles. It’s a sensory experience too — hearing the background music, taking in the colours and designs, feeling the fabrics…
